Aerobic units

Aerobic Septic System Service Near Lake Houston, TX

An aerobic treatment unit has an air pump, an alarm and spray heads, and a maintenance schedule that the state sets, not you.

In short

  • Licensed maintenance provider, an individual person
  • Report at least every four months (six with a monitor)
  • Owner repairs anything that is not working
  • Never use pool tablets

What a Visit Covers

An aerobic unit treats wastewater with air instead of letting a tank do the work alone, and then usually disperses it over the lawn through spray heads. That means moving parts: an air pump, usually in a box beside the unit, a control panel with an alarm, and the heads. The maintenance provider checks that each is working, that the disinfection stage has what it needs and that nothing is backing up, and files a report.

TCEQ's page puts the owner's duties plainly: have any component that is not operating properly repaired, make the contract clear about who maintains the disinfection unit, and use the right tablets. An alarm that has been sounding for a week is a repair, not a nuisance.

Who Qualifies as a Maintenance Provider

TCEQ's page describes a licensed maintenance provider as an individual with an Installer Class II license, a Class C or higher wastewater operator license, or three years as a registered maintenance provider or technician, plus the basic and advanced aerobic courses and an exam. Ask the person on the contract for the license, and ask whether the technician who actually shows up is registered under him.

After two years, TCEQ's page lets owners perform maintenance on certain other system types, such as drip irrigation and surface application, and notes that some local authorities are stricter. It does not give that allowance for the aerobic unit itself, so ask the county before assuming it applies to you.

Why This Matters Around New Caney and Porter

New Caney and Porter have grown fast: the combined New Caney–Porter population rose from 60,140 to 77,795 between 2018 and 2023, nearly 30%, and about two in five homes in each place were built in the 2010s or later. A newer house on a half acre outside a district's sewer is the kind of property that may have an aerobic unit rather than a conventional tank, and the permit file or the lid tells you which.

Common Questions

Who is allowed to maintain an aerobic unit?

TCEQ's page says the contract must be with a licensed maintenance provider, who must be an individual person rather than a company, and that anyone doing the work under him must be a registered maintenance technician.

How often do the visits happen?

TCEQ's page requires a report at least once every four months, or every six months if the unit has an electronic monitor. Owner complaints also trigger visits.

Can I use pool chlorine tablets in the disinfection unit?

No. TCEQ's page says to use calcium hypochlorite tablets certified for wastewater disinfection and warns that swimming pool tablets can release explosive gas. Make the contract clear about who maintains the disinfection unit.

An alarm sounding, or a contract that ran out?

Call. The pro checks the unit and tells you what the next visit has to cover.
