Signs of failure

Signs Your Septic System Is Failing Near Lake Houston, TX

What a septic system does before it quits, and what to do the day you notice.

In short

  • Slow or gurgling drains throughout the house
  • Soggy ground or a very green strip over the field
  • Sewage smell, indoors or in the yard
  • An alarm on an aerobic unit
A long strip of brighter, lusher green grass in parallel lines running across a back yard from the house toward a fence, a soggy low spot with standing water at one end and a round tank lid in the grass near the house

What to Watch For

  • Every drain slowing at once, or the lowest tub or shower bubbling when the washer drains.
  • Gurgling from toilets and drains after water runs.
  • Sewage smell in the house, by the tank or over the field.
  • Wet, spongy ground or standing water over the field, especially when it has not rained.
  • A bright green strip in the lawn along the lines.
  • Sewage backing up into a floor drain, tub or toilet. This is the one that cannot wait.
  • An alarm on an aerobic unit's panel that has been sounding for days.

What to Do the Day You Notice

  1. Cut the water use. Spread laundry out, skip the dishwasher, shorten showers. Harris County's page notes that one leaking toilet can overburden a system on its own, so fix leaks.
  2. Keep people and pets off wet spots. Standing effluent is a health hazard and should not be handled or played in.
  3. Find the lid and the alarm. Know where the tank access is and whether the unit has an alarm; the pro will ask.
  4. Call. The pro opens the lid, checks the box and tells you whether it is the tank, the lines or the field.

Common Questions

Is a green stripe over the field good or bad?

Neither by itself. Grass over a drain field is often greener because it is being watered from below. A stripe that is much greener than the rest of the yard, together with a soggy patch or a smell, points at effluent coming up.

How is a full tank different from a failed field?

A full tank gets better after pumping. A failed field shows the same symptoms again within days or weeks of pumping because the soil is no longer absorbing. That is why the pro looks inside the tank and at the box before quoting.

Seeing any of these?

Call. The sooner the lid comes off, the cheaper the answer usually is.
